Marine Services undertakes many different forms of marine survey work, including the following:-

Surveys for hull and outfit certification

This service is provided for new fishing vessels less than 24m RL that require construction certification. We offer various options with regard to the survey arrangements. Clients may opt for a basic service whereupon inspections can be kept to the minimum number necessary for certification. Alternatively, stage surveys can be arranged at fixed intervals to form a financial control for the release of payments from owner to boat builder.

LSA surveys

Marine Services is authorised to inspect and certify the Life Saving Appliances aboard new fishing vessels under 15 metres length overall. This service is usually included in the construction certification survey process.

Condition surveys

Our surveyors can perform annual inspections to assess the condition of a vessel, providing a comprehensive report listing any defects and recommendations.

Pre-purchase surveys

We provide this service to prospective boat buyers who wish to confirm the particulars of a vessel prior to purchase.

Surveys for FIFG grants

Marine Services regularly performs surveys of vessels which are subject to the possibility of an FIFG grant.

Inspection of existing vessels new to the fishing vessel register

This service is provided for existing vessels less than 24m RL that do not have Seafish certification. An owner should only submit an application if either the RSS or MCA request a Seafish inspection report (please note that this does not result in Seafish certification).

Consultancy and Survey / Certification Services

With over 100 years combined experience in the ship construction industry, our marine survey team offers a comprehensive consultancy and inspection / certification service ensuring that vessels are built to meet statutory safety and construction requirements. We are authorised by the MCA to certify the following types of vessels, measuring up to 24 metres registered length:

  • Fishing vessels
  • Patrol boats
  • Research vessels
  • Work boats

All vessels are certified to the Seafish Construction Standards (in conjunction with MGN 280 in the case of workboats) which are in compliance with the relevant codes of practice published by the MCA. Click here to view some of the vessels we have certified in the past.

Re-measurement and Tonnage Calculations

We are also authorised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to undertake re-measurement and tonnage calculations to meet EU Tonnage Regulations (ITC69).

This service is available for fishing vessels of 15 metres overall length through to 24 metres LBP (length between perpendiculars). If there is any doubt of the vessel's LBP, one of our marine surveyors will be able to advise.

Quality Assurance System

Seafish Marine Survey is accredited by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance to ISO 9001:2008 giving a consistently high level of service to our customers.

Registration inspections

We currently provide an inspection service for existing vessels built before 16th July 2007 which are new to the fishing vessel register and vessels that have been de-registered for a period of 6 months or more.

Procedure

An owner or agent of such a boat wishing to register it as a UK fishing vessel should first contact the RSS or MCA to make the initial request. If the RSS or MCA then state that they require a Seafish inspection report, an Application for Inspection (form 27) should be submitted to Seafish.

Once we have received your application, we will notify you of the cost for the inspection and, after payment has been made, a surveyor will contact you to arrange a suitable date and time for the inspection to take place. The vessel will need to be out of the water at the time of inspection.

Following the inspection, a report will be issued to both the applicant and the MCA, whereupon the MCA will make a decision whether or not to allow registration based on the findings of the report. Please note that the report does not constitute Seafish certification. It is quite possible that a vessel may be refused registration or that modifications may be required to permit registration. If the MCA request a re-inspection of the vessel by Seafish then further charges may apply.

Application

Please contact the Administrator at our Edinburgh office if you would like an application form to be posted out to you. Otherwise, you may download the application using the following link:
